TRAVEL AND CONFERENCE FUND – 2016 Madagascar Workshop, ‘The Sacred and the Profane: Society, Cosmology and the Environment in Madagascar’ (27-29 May 2016, Avignon, France)
The Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University offers 4 scholarships to Malagasy graduate students (PhD or post-doctoral candidates) or full scholars in the fields of anthropology, geography, history, linguistics, archaeology, or related disciplines, to attend a multidisciplinary workshop on Madagascar to be held in Avignon, France, on 27 and 28 May 2016.The fund covers airfare and accommodation during both conference days, as well as conference registration fees.
Candidates are asked to send a 250-300 word abstract of their proposed presentation, in English or French, and should include the student’s department and affiliation. Please include a C.V.
DEADLINE: Abstracts should be sent to conference organisers (see https://madagascarworkshop2016.wordpress.com/contact-us/) by 25 April 2016. Successful applicants will be informed by 30 April 2016. Full papers from successful candidates will be expected by 20 May 2016. Student papers will be discussed in a graduate student seminar, to be held at the conference.

The theme of the 2016 workshop is:

The Sacred and the Profane; Society, Cosmology and the Environment in Madagascar

Date: May 27-May 28, 2016 (May 29-30- optional events)
Place: Avignon, France

2016 marks the 11th anniversary of a long-standing collaboration on “Madagascar Workshops” held in alternating years at McGill University and the University of Toronto. This multidisciplinary meeting brings together top scholars and students from different fields, including Anthropology, History, Geography, Linguistics, and Archaeology, to present and discuss their current research on Malagasy society, history and culture. The central purpose of the meeting is to exchange and build knowledge on Madagascar and its surrounding islands and to spark intergenerational dialogue on various aspects of Malagasy society, history and culture.

Workshop overview:

The Workshop itself consists of two full days of presentations, on May 27 and 28. Day 1 will consist of double panel presentations, a thematic plenary session (topic TBD), and a keynote address. Day 2 will consist of single panels, a thematic plenary session (topic TBD), a graduate student seminar, and a keynote lecture.

We are delighted to announce two keynote speakers for the workshop: Dr. Sophie Blanchy (CNRS, Laboratoire d’ethnologie et de sociologie comparative/CNRS-Université de Paris Ouest Nanterre) and Dr. Jean-Aimé Rakotoarisoa (INALCO/l’Institut de Civilisations de l’Université d’Antananarivo).

A conference dinner for participants will be held May 28th.  Optional events include an excursion to scenic Chateauneuf du Pape wine country (May 29th) and a workshop planning meeting (May 30th).
