Information for Participants

Presenters: Spaces for presenting participants are limited.If you wish to present a paper, please submit an abstract to the organisers by April 10, 2016.

Update: The deadline to submit abstracts was April 10, 2016, however the deadline has been extended to April 25 for Malagasy citizens, who may receive a travel grant if selected (see below).

Attending the conference: The conference is open to all, though a registration fee is requested for non-presenting observers (see below). If you wish to observe the conference proceedings, please contact the organisers as soon as possible and register no later than April 30, 2016. The keynote lectures are free and open to the public.

 Proceedings: A special issue of the new Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies drawn from the proceedings will be published following the workshop. Please visit the conference homepage for updates.

Travel and Conference Fund

 The Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University offers 4 scholarships to Malagasy graduate students (PhD or post-doctoral candidates) or full scholars in the fields of anthropology, geography, history, linguistics, archaeology, or related disciplines, to attend a multidisciplinary workshop on Madagascar to be held in Avignon, France, on 27 and 28 May 2016.The fund covers airfare and accommodation during both conference days, as well as conference registration fees.
Candidates are asked to send a 250-300 word abstract of their proposed presentation, in English or French, and should include the student’s department and affiliation. Please include a C.V.
Deadline: Abstracts should be sent to conference organisers  by 25 April 2016. Successful applicants will be informed by 30 April 2016. Full papers from successful candidates will be expected by 20 May 2016. Student papers will be discussed in a graduate student seminar, to be held at the conference.


Registration fees for presenting participants cover catering during both conference days and conference dinner; For non-presenting attendees, fees cover lunch on both days and coffee breaks/light snacks

  • Established scholars: 30 Euros
  • Observers (may attend all workshop sessions):10 Euros/ day
  • Keynote lecture: Free / Open to public
